“Radio is such an integral part of who I am”: Broadway Bill on Game Changers: Radio

Staff Writer

New York’s WCBS-FM jock Broadway Bill Lee was a guest on the latest instalment of Game Changers: Radio with Craig Bruce.

With over 40 years in the radio business, Lee’s charisma and infectious energy remains an integral part of his broadcasting to this day. He’s even been embracing social media as seen in his popular Facebook videos.

“The truth is I’ve never had any goals in my whole life,” Lee told Bruce about his first tastes of the industry. “I would go into the radio station for the joy of playing the music, first and foremost […] I just did it for the love of what I was doing.”

According to Lee, the thrill of getting radio right will never wear out, referencing the words of SiriusXM’s legendary announcer Howard Stern’s response to some of Lee’s best work: “Look at the look on his face, I can see the orgasm and the smile in his eyes.”

His voice has become unmistakable with audiences in the US, and so has his rhyme. Originally inspired by disc jockey Pete Myers (aka Mad Daddy), Lee slowly but surely incorporated the moves into his own routine.

“It kind of all happened gradually but it all peaked at the right time for me,” Lee said. “By the time I got hired at KFRC in San Francisco, Gerry Cagel called me into his office and said, ‘I want you to do that on every break, don’t not rhyme!’”

“Somewhere deep down inside, radio is such an integral part of who I am as a person,” Lee admits. “It puts together my love of music – it puts together my ability to have the freedom to say what I need to say.”

Craig is doing such a gamechanging job at appealing to the unconventional podcast demo. I’m 62 and love these audio conversations.

What a listen!!Bill Lee works alongside some of the best music jocks in the world on 101 WCBSFM and they all sound as fresh as they did 20 years ago,but Bill is the master of rapping around song intros. Not sure why Australian radio never embraced and continued this form of presentation. Thanks Craig for the terrific interview.
