PSN rebrands 1377 AM to SEN+

Former Assistant Editor

Pacific Star Network has announced that Melbourne’s 3MP Classic Rock Radio 1377 AM will now be known as SEN+

The company’s second station in Melbourne will now feature sports content almost exclusively from Monday August 13.

PSN managing director and Crocmedia CEO Craig Hutchison said the station will drive an additional live sports agenda to further leverage the company’s rights deals and content relationships with a variety of sporting codes.

“We have a passion for sport and feel there’s never too much of a good thing at SEN+,” he said.

“SEN+ will begin with dedicated calls of sports such as VFL football and will leverage our rights portfolio more aggressively, including becoming the dedicated home of national A-League matches in the summer.”

“All of the 1116 SEN on air favourites and their shows will also be showcased in different, and sometimes catch-up environments.”

The announcement flagged that SEN+ will broadcast almost 100 A-League matches, Leverage additional Melbourne United content and broadcast matches after the company’s recent joint major ownership stake, and creative additional cricket and racing content.

Hutchison also flagged that community and women’s sport would continue to be a focus area.

“We are open for business on live sport and look forward to many non-traditional discussions. We are keen to give sports fans greater choice than ever before,” he said.

“And for those who feel they have live sport products that suit dedicated audiences, we look forward to engaging them.”

There will now be 3 commercial sports stations in Melbourne if you don’t RSN 927AM (3UZ): 1116 SEN (their main station), Macquarie Sports Radio 1278 & Now SEN+ 1377 (extra station for SEN).

this will also leave Melbourne with no AM music stations on commercial radio with the only Commercial Radio AM station without an all sports format most of the time will be News/Talk on 3AW (Except AFL Coverage, Sunday Sport, Footy Nightline on weekends and an hour of Sportsday during the week).

I miss the old Magic 1278 format with the music they played and particularly John Blackman’s Breakfast show (when he was at Magic a couple of years ago). With SEN converting 1377AM into an extra station for SEN with all commercial AM radio stations other than 3AW in Melbourne now being all sports, Macquarie management should bring the old Magic 1278 format back.

3 sports stations in Melbourne? Also, pretty sure you need to broadcast at least 3 hours of local content a day right?

How can they get away with this?

Three sports stations in the one city? How are they going to share the two listeners? This is going to be interesting.

@Michael – The 3 hours a day only applies to regional stations. Besides, SEN+ content is going to be almost exclusively Melbourne based, so would count as local anyway.

SEN+ (1377AM) will be great for the listeners only in Frankston & the Mornington Peninsula who get best reception.

If they point the AM transmitter towards Melbourne city (not towards Frankston as it has been since 1977) they may get some extra listeners.

Checking the online stream the new SEN+ seems to be a simulcast of 1116AM SEN with some breakaway programming/different ads, as well as different traffic and weather segments airing at different times to 1116AM.

Why would they buy a radio licence on the same band (AM) to simulcast what is already on SEN. It’s so stupid. What are we going to get in summer..Sheffield Shield or District Cricket or will they be still talking about AFL. What’s on after midnight, more sports. Very boring. Obviously 0-2 % ratings is good news for the owners. They are running these stations to suit themselves and don’t care about the listeners.

Dumb decision…it has a crap signal but 1377 actually had a really, really good playlist. For most of the time, it will be a facsimile of 1116 (is that even permitted?) like now – Andy Maher’s show on both.

Crocmedia and PSN don’t care whether or not you’re listening. SEN+ hasn’t been in the ratings since MTR (which was a colossal failure) and are just using it the way they have been for years. As a hole to sell more advertising.

It was run on the smell of an oily rag and the reason they’ve changed the format is probably so they don’t have to pay APRA anymore.

We need a station for boomers like Magic was. Possibly Magic didn’t make that much $$ but who wants to listen to SEN+ and its coverage of Moonee Ponds B grade netball?
If Magic only had 20,000 listeners, SEN+ will be lucky to have 20

This station was just as dour as Triple M classic rock. The same old cliché classic rock songs over and over with incessant ads to fill in the gaps. Buy yourself a digital radio and just use a USB stick with it or an iPod where you can control what you hear. These radio stations all suck.

I listened to 1278 for years then it was turned into a boring lifestyle format, so boring it has since changed to I know not what. Then I discovered 1377 and have listened to it for years. Now it has changed to a sports station. Just what we need, another sports station!!! There are other sports stations, why turn 1377 into yet another that I won’t listen to out of principle. I have listened though and it’s boring.
BRING BACK CLASSIC ROCK 1377!!!!

Pathetic! Minister for Communications should be sacked for allowing this to happen. Yet another sports station blatantly sponsored by the betting companies. I want some music to listen to not old “has beens” sprouting their opinions. Thankfully I can tune into 3GG.
