New Zealand survey results released

Staff Writer

In what is the '9th busiest survey day of the year' (after the Australian metros), today has seen the release of Wollongong ratings (here), Canberra ratings (here) and now New Zealand ratings in the three metropolitan markets in that country.

For Australians there are some important differences in how surveys are completed in New Zealand, with the most notable being the absence of non-commercial (government) stations – therefore the shares quoted are a share of commercial listening only.

The big winner in todays survey results was Newstalk ZB (TRN) which is the number one radio station in the three metropolitan markets (Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington).

Group General Manager of Content David Brice commented:

"This is an outstanding outcome….Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking Breakfast yet again dominated breakfast ratings achieving number one in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch….a significant achievement"

However, opposition company MediaWorks had a higher overall network share with 1.46 million New Zealanders listening to their stations each week. Group Programme Director, Andrew Szusterman said:

"I'm stoked. The Sound's launch has exceeded expectations and MORE FM's Auckland Breakfast with Marc Ellis, Amber Peebles and Stu Tolan has shown breakfast radio is as competitive as ever. We couldn't ask for a better result."

Looking at the three metros, firstly Auckland (population: 1.2 million):

The leading station, on share in Newstalk ZB on 12.5% followed by Coast (AC) on 8.9% and ZM (Hot AC) on 6.7%. In equal fourth place are The Edge (CHR) and The Rock (Rock). Newstalk ZB, unusually by Australian comparisons, is also the number one Cume station in the Auckland market.

Below is the share graph for Auckland:
