More companies eye-off Audioboom

Podcasting company Audioboom is receiving attention from a number of high-profile audio companies interested in buying the UK based service.

According to an article by This Is Money, senior sources have confirmed that Sony Music is showing interest in buying Audioboom, joining a range of other competitors which might be interested in buying the company.

Sony joins Amazon, Spotify, Acast and Liberty Global in the list of potential bidders, with reports that Spotify and Amazon are poised to make an offer in the near future, after Amazon was said to be seeking advice from bankers at JP Morgan.

According to City AM, Audioboom content is downloaded more than 100 million times each month by 30 million unique listeners around the world and is ranked the fourth largest podcast publisher in the US by Triton Digital.

Shares in Audioboom skyrocketed to an all-time high after the pandemic, showing a 52.55% increase according to Google Finance, drawing attention from the audio big-wigs.

Nick Candy, a 15% shareholder in the company described the business’ surge as being “on steroids,” after slower years prior.

“The first few years – jeez they were challenging. But then Covid hit, and it was like the business was on steroids,” said Candy.

Triton Digital’s Australian Podcast Ranker for January had 7 appearances from Audioboom podcasts in the top 100, with 3 in the top 20.

Audioboom’s Casefile True Crime has been dominating in the ranker in recent months, with a convincing hold on the top spot in January’s podcast ranker at 1,975,682 monthly downloads – 600,000 in front of the rank below.

Other Audioboom features in the top 100 were Morbid: A True Crime Podcast, No Such Thing as a Fish, Redhanded, Diary of a CEO by Steven Bartlett, Dark History and The Tiny Meat Gang Podcast.

All bidders have so far been reluctant to comment on any intentions to buy Audioboom as suspense grows.
