Mobbsy gives Bay FM the finger
The above Facebook post comes from Peter 'Mobbsy' Mobbs on the Bay FM Facebook page, after being axed last week following 15 years with the company (see earlier story here).
Now the news has gone social, with a Facebook campaign launched to reinstate Mobbsy, and Bay FM's General Manager posting an open letter online explaining the decision.
The Facebook page, called 'bring back peter mobbs' (see here) had 213 likes at the time of writing.
On his personal Facebook page Mobbsy, who prior to his 15 years in Geelong had a successful career as half of Triple M's 'Mobbs and Fletch' program, has written;
"I will walk with my head held high and my middle finger held higher' and in a separate post "just been made redundant after nearly 16 years on GTown radio. Thanks for tuning in freaks. Just wish the fat f**ck in the suit did it earlier in the week while the surf was pumping."
In an open letter on Bay FM's Facebook page, Grant Broadcasters General Manager Dean Anglin has written;
Dear BayFM Family,
By now you may be aware of the departure of Peter Mobbs and understandably there are a few questions, so I thought it might be best for me to take a moment to at least talk about the decision.
It is important to understand that any business that decides to reduce staff numbers does not take that decision lightly and we are no different. As is always the way, we are regularly reviewing our business to ensure that we maintain a sustainable model that produces the best radio for Geelong. In 2010 part of this review was to move Peter Mobbs from K-ROCK to BayFM and for the first time in a long time BayFM’s had 5 full time announcers.
During the 2010 review we were proud to be able to make all of our planned changes without any job losses.
Unfortunately the world of 2012 is very different to that of 2010 and during our review this year it was decided to reduce the total number of full time announcers on BayFM by one. While I won’t go into the reasons for choosing an announcer for this change, I will say that it is a reality of our business that a lot of work is required in the background to make 24/7 radio and we don’t have an abundance of behind the scenes staff, therefore it was necessary to make the tough decision for Peter Mobbs.
We always work hard to connect with our audience, so I understand that everyone will have their own opinion of the situation. The beauty of the social media space is that everyone gets a chance to voice it, and we welcome that as we always have.
For those calling for it, unfortunately the decision is not able to be reversed but the support for Mobbsy overnight has been amazing. BayFM & K-ROCK would like to thank Mobbsy for his 15+ years of service to our company, we have no doubt that he will be missed by many and we wish him the very best for all future endeavours.
Regards
Dean Anglin
General Manager
And whilst he's obviously having a rough week, Mobbsy posted this on his Facebook page;
I am so lucky to have such great FB friends and so many loyal listeners. Your messages have meant so much to me and my family the past day. After such a long time on the air every day I kinda forgot that people actually 'listened'. As Keef said: 'It's good to be here, good to be anywhere..'
And props to other peeps in GTown who have lost their jobs. Im fully aware that others are doing it tougher than me. Snizzle.
