Hungry Crocs: Power 100 duo’s cheeky bid to get the Townsville Crocs Back

What does Cyclone Kirrily and the missing Hungry Jacks sign from Mundingburra have to do with getting the Townsville Crocs back into the NBL?

Absolutely everything – according to Power 100 Breakfast duo Archie & Donny.

The glaring omission from the Ross River Road skyline has been unavoidable these past few weeks.

But where most people just saw a missing sign, Archie & Donny saw an opportunity for the city.

“We have something Hungry Jacks wants back. As the major sponsor of the NBL, Hungry Jacks has the power to give the city of Townsville something it wants back – The Townsville Crocs.”

“We believe a fair trade would be us returning their sign to them in exchange for the licence and re-admission of the Townsville Crocs back into the league,” says Donny.

With the help of their listeners, pieces of the missing sign were picked up and delivered to the radio station after the boys put the call out on air asking for help to retrieve all the missing bits.

“We have the best listeners in the city. Less than 35 minutes after sharing the location of the biggest parts of the missing sign, we had listeners rolling into the studio in the city with it strapped to their trucks and cars.”

A social media campaign orchestrated by Archie & Donny addressing Hungry Jacks has been viewed thousands of times.

The campaign has already attracted plenty of media interest.

It’s also gained the attention of Andy Lee from The Hundred on Channel Nine, saying on the Power 100 Breakfast show, “It’s one of the great hostage negotiations of all time. Where can I get the rights for this life story to be able to make the Hollywood film for it?”

The Townsville Crocs have not competed in the NBL since 2016. Once one of the most iconic sporting events on the social calendar in Townsville, Archie & Donny feel it’s time for the beloved team to come back to north Queensland.

“Since getting to Townsville, I have heard hundreds of people share their Crocs’ stories about how amazing the atmosphere was at The Swamp and how much the team unified the city,” says Archie.

Aussie basketball great Andrew Gaze backed the idea on the brekky show, saying  “I think that is more than a fair trade. A little bit of slight handedness but I think there is some really strong merit … they (Hungry Jacks) get their much-valued sign back. The community gets their  Crocs, that can go on to represent the City through the nation.”

Boomers head coach Brian Goorjian spoke to the boys this week, saying “The NBL is trying to grow. One of the things that is missing is teams for all these players that we’re developing to play in. And in my memory, some of my greatest battles and fun times were in Townsville when the Crocs were around.”

Shaun Williams – who locals remember as the much-loved mascot ‘The Croc’ – also offered his endorsement, saying “if you boys get the Crocs back, I’ll guarantee you I’ll do the first season.”

We guess the ball is now in Hungry Jacks’ court.
