Gawndy and Ryan Jon on how to succeed in radio and why radio talent outlasts TV talent
The latest episode of Daniel ‘Gawndy’ Gawned‘s The Radio Randomly Podcast features Hit92.9 Breakfast host Ryan Jon.
The two SCA presenters chat about a range of topics including how they both got started in radio and the keys to making it as a successful presenter.
After Ryan reveals he used to work as part of a male duo on Power FM, Gawndy admits he’d like to be part of that format one day.
“I’ve suggested it… but they always like the male/female combo,” Gawndy says. “I think Hamish and Andy wrecked it for everyone who wants to be a male duo.
“I’ve been a bit cautious about doing two dudes… It doesn’t matter if you do a different style or totally different people, you just get compared to them,” says Ryan.
The boys then discuss why Nova 96.9’s Fitzy and Wippa seem to be immune from the Hamish and Andy comparisons, and Gawndy suggests that if he and Ryan ever did a show together it would be “more down the Fitzy and Wippa road.”
The discussion then turns to the pain of losing an on-air partner and how that can stunt your growth as a presenter, as well as how radio talent often outlasts television talent and why comedians can be naive to think its easy to cross over into radio.
Ryan also reveals that he’s always been hesitant to work with an ex-reality TV personality.
“The ones that have been on TV and are now doing well in radio, have given the time to radio,” Gawndy surmises.
“If you’re gonna do it, do it properly, don’t phone it in,” adds Ryan.

Awesome listen boys. Both radio success stories. Like to hear these two on brekky somewhere.
The Ryan and Gawndy show would be a lot better than a lot of shows on air at the moment. I’d listen.
I’m not sure how serious they were but The Ryan and Gawndy Show would actually be a lot better than a lot of other shows currently on air.
Saw Ryan’s Collingwood video. Bloody funny stuff
Like this what a duo they would be.
