AFTRS reveals the next level of storytelling

Staff Writer

Launching as part of Sydney’s Vivid Ideas 2017 program, AFTRS has announced Precipice, an innovative binaural podcast showcasing a new standard of storytelling.

It challenges existing podcast story formats by not using narration, but instead experimenting with the potential texturing and intimacy achievable with binaural recording methods, providing an immersive story world layer through enhanced sounds.

“Precipice is an example of the exciting innovations coming out of AFTRS, working in partnership with industry colleagues and, in this instance, with our radio division,” said AFTRS CEO Neil Peplow.

It is created in partnership with New York’s WNYC Public Radio, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs VOX, and in consultation with the BBC’s audio research division.

Peplow added: “AFTRS is road-testing cutting-edge technologies to help empower current and future storytellers, and partners with industry to trial new storytelling platforms and innovations.”

Prior to Precipice’s unveiling at Vivid, a special binaural episode was broadcast by the BBC in the latest series of Doctor Who.

The Vivid Precipice experience will run in 30-minute sessions throughout the duration of the event.
