ABC listeners donate half a million dollars for Syria

Staff Writer

Last Tuesday, triple j's Tom & Alex did listener challenges throughout a show to help raise money for Syria.

They weren't the only people at the ABC raising money, ABC Local Radio and RN also did their part.

On Sunday October 20 the Syria humanitarian relief appeal aired on ABC Local Radio from 12pm to 3pm and was then simulcast on RN from 2pm to 3pm.

Tom & Alex alone raised over $40,000, with the total donated via ABC broadcasts coming in at over $500,000. The funds will provide aid to over two million refugees that are living in relief centres, and to those communities housing Syrian refugees in places like Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.

Ian Mannix, ABC Manager, Emergency Broadcasting & Community Development, says, “as with the previous ABC appeals for East Africa famine relief and the Pakistan flood crisis, ABC audiences have demonstrated their capacity for support and given so generously to those Syrian refugees in desperate need of food, water, shelter and health care."
