VOTE: Who are the funniest women in FM radio?
“Where are all the women?”
That was the overwhelming response after we published the results of our reader-voted poll, FM Radio’s Top 20 Comedians.
Yes, it appeared cruel that we only allowed one vote to be cast at a time. But if politics (or reality TV) has taught us anything, it’s that your vote counts.
Former 2DayFM Breakfast star Wendy Harmer tweeted: “As lead on the ratings-winning Morning Crew for 11 years, I don’t even rate!”
“Radio is a miserable business… To radio management, any joke is a risk,” Helen Razer noted when answering the self-imposed question of “are there no funny women on radio?”.
In an episode of the Game Changers: Radio podcast, Chrissie Swan revealed that a former program director told her not to laugh.
There is no denying that it takes balls to be funny on-air. One could argue that takes even bigger balls to be funny on the radio if you’re a woman.
So here it is – a list of women just as entertaining, hilarious and witty as anyone else who made it into the Top 20 comedians list. It’s also worth noting that many of the familiar names below were on Radio Today’s original poll.
Who are the funniest women in Australian FM Radio? You decide.
Voting closes midnight AEDT Sunday, March 25, and as always, you can let us know if we’ve missed anyone by commenting or emailing us here.
Radio Today will hit publish on the results next week.
