Tommy Little talks going from handing out icy cold cans of Coke in the Black Thunders to hosting afternoon radio on #YGSS

Staff Writer

This week on You’ve Gotta Start Somewhere (#YGSS), Rachel Corbett chats with comedian Tommy Little.

After a few years drifting through a drama course, Tommy got his first taste of stand up comedy and never looked back.

Starting out in community radio and television, he got his foot in the door of commercial radio via the promotions department, handing out icy cold cans of Coke in the Black Thunders.  Realising he was unlikely to get on-air that way, he quit his job to enter a competition to be the “Spring Carnival Spruiker.” Luckily the gamble paid off with Tommy spending a month as the station’s racing reporter and the rest is history.

In this episode, Tommy talks about being a short kid with big basketball dreams, his love of Chap Sticks, the worst comedy gig he’s ever done and why the only place he feels at peace is on-stage.

You’ve Gotta Start Somewhere is a podcast that goes behind the scenes of show business to prove there’s no such thing as an overnight success.

Each week Rachel chats with well-known media personalities about how they got into the business, how they’ve managed to stay there and what it takes to build a successful career. Click here to subscribe to the podcast.

If 2DAY put Tommy Little and Carrie Bickmore on Drive, they will get the same ratings that Rove achieved for the station.

You can’t just put TV personalities onto radio and expect it to work. Clearly these guys just don’t get radio.
