The Music Network Chart Wrap: Aug 27

In a new weekly piece in Radio Today, the crew from The Music Network will let us know what's going on in music with their Chart Wrap.

HOT 100

White Walls by Macklemore, Ryan Lewis & Schoolboy Q had the highest debut this week in the TMN Hot 100 at #40, just ahead of the queen of controversy: Lady Gaga, with her Applause. Applause is the first single on Gaga’s forthcoming album ARTPOP. Bonnie McKee’s new single American Girl also debuted in the top 50, It’s the first single from her second album by the same name. Fun Fact: Bonnie McKee has co-written eight #1 singles in recent years, for the likes of Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Ke$ha to name a few. Definitely one to watch.

Avicii continues his reign at #1 for his ninth week in the charts; his new single You Make Me was #1 most added single to radio last week, a week before it was officially serviced to radio. Jason Derulo and 2Chainz’ Talk Dirty has jumped up 7 spots to #2 and Katy Perry has moved up 28 spots from last week to #7 with Roar. Other notable movers and shakers this week include the Cedric Gervais treatment of Lana Del Rey’s Summertime Sadness – up 14 spots to #12 –and Lorde’s new single Tennis Court, up 27 spots to #44.

ARIA SINGLES

Katy Perry has roared into #1 this week (see what I did there) after her debut in the third spot last week; this is the first time she’s topped the chart since California Girls in 2010 and her unofficial bi-curious anthem I Kissed A Girl back in ’08. Talk Dirty has mirrored its success in the TMN Hot 100, in second place this week, and Avicii has dropped down to #3. Lana Del Rey and Cedric Gervais’ collab. has moved up 10 spots to #4 this week: her second single to crack the ARIA top 10 and her highest peak ever, while Lorde’s Love Club EP rounds out the top 5. Jessie J’s It’s My Party has debuted at #20 and Bag Raiders have dropped back into the top 40 with Shooting Stars. The track is enjoying some new love after being used as the soundtrack to Tommy Franklin’s performance on Australia’s Got Talent. It sees a new peak for the re-invigorated single, as in ’09 it failed to break the top 50.

ARIA ALBUMS

Boy & Bear’s Harlequin Dreams debuted in pole position this week and is their first effort to top the ARIA Chart. Bad Blood by Bastille has entered the top 10 albums this week off the back of their recently completed Australian tour – up from #18 last week.

The Very Best Of Slim Dusty has been reissued again and thus has pushed back into the #17 spot on the chart this week. It’s a new peak for an album which has charted in 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2012. Earl Sweatshirt’s Doris has debuted at #23 this week, it’s his first (label-sanctioned) effort and his first appearance in the chart, at the tender age of 19. Earl is free.
