Survey #1 2017: Ipswich

Former Features Editor

Local content reigns supreme in the first ever survey results released for the south-east Queensland region of Ipswich, with more than one in four listeners opting for River 94.9.

Situated 40km west of Brisbane and recognised as one of Queensland’s fastest-growing cities, a large percentage of Ipswich’s 230,000-strong population overlaps the Brisbane radio licence area – however the survey shows the impact and influence of the local station owned by Grant Broadcasters.

River 94.9 earned a share of 26.4% of the 10+ audience, with its nearest competitor being hit105 with 14.3%. Interestingly, triple j and Nova 106.9 are tied on 5.6% each.

Over on the AM band, ABC Radio Brisbane earned the top spot with 6.2% audience share.

More Ipswich residents listen to River 94.9’s breakfast show Marnie & Campo than Triple M’s Marto, Ed & Robin and triple j’s Ben & Liam combined. hit105’s Stav, Abby & Matt were the second most popular show for the all important Breakfast session.

Other key points in terms of sessions include:

  • triple j beating Triple M and Nova 106.9 in the Drive timeslot
  • ABC Radio‘s audience share jumping to a high of 11.6% in Evenings, with only two FM claiming a higher audience share during that timeslot
  • The highest percentage of listeners River 94.9 achieved while the Mornings show with Woody, with 31.6%

River 94.9 FM’s general manager Shane O’Brien described the results as “massively rewarding”.

“The figures today reveal River 94.9 FM as the clear number one choice for our region, across all shifts and all demographics,” he said.

“We pride ourselves on being the most live, local and community connected radio station in town, and today’s result is testament to the enormous amount of hard work from the River 94.9 FM team over the past few years.”

No wonder the people of Ipswich are loyal to River 94.9 rather than the Brisbane stations (i.e. Hit 105, Nova 106.9 and 97.3 FM), even the baby boomers.
