“I can create a capital city listenership from Noosa”: Dave Matthews on Rising Stars

Staff Writer

Dave Matthews, co-host of Hot 91.1 breakfast on the Sunshine Coast, features on the latest episode of Rising Stars.

The former music announcer departed Hit105 four-and-a-half months ago to join breakfast host Sam Coward and long-term “Hot 91’er” Ash Gierke, making a name for himself as one of the top young radio talents in the country.

“I was given an opportunity – it was probably way over my abilities at that time,” Matthews admitted to Rising Stars’ host Craig Bruce. “I’m never one to say no.”

While Craig naturally presumed the “sideways move” to regional radio was simply a way to generate an audience and eventually take that to a larger market, Matthews indicated that he, in fact, has other plans for the Sunshine Coast.

“I have this passion to create Noosa as a metro market – I can create a capital city listenership from Noosa.”

When it comes to content, it’s all about marketing and understanding people, according to the brekkie host, who vividly recounted notable segments about fish and chips, Sunny Coast’s ugliest feet and a bizarre wrestling match.

“We’re always looking for opportunities to be local but also to do something that none of the other radio stations in the market are doing,” Matthews said. “We registered Sam as a contestant in a local wrestling match. He rocked up there and had to do a proper match in a pink tutu.”

“That was quite enjoyable for me to watch,” he laughed.

Every day this week, Radio Today will exclusively premiere the Rising Stars series of Game Changers: Radio, featuring interviews with Ash London, Ryan Jon, Zoe Marshall, Ben & Liam and Dave Matthews.

Good read. Well done Dave, however, you are not the first to do the Wrestling stunt. That was done by Sea FM Breakfast a while back… Just FYI.

well done Dave, I hope you can do it.. Hot91’s streaming numbers are pretty low so good luck with getting “metro” listener ship out of the whole sunshine coast let alone Noosa.

Came across as pretty arrogant.
