Merrick Watts on the radio industry’s lack of mentoring programs

Staff Writer

This week on You’ve Gotta Start Somewhere, Rachel Corbett chats to comedian and radio presenter, Merrick Watts.

After years hosting radio and television shows as part of the comedy duo Merrick & Rosso, Merrick Watts has established himself as an independent performer hosting breakfast and drive shows for Nova 96.9, Triple M and 2Day FM.

This year he embarked on the first solo stand-up tour of his career while hosting his own drive show for Triple M Sydney, Merrickville.

In this episode Merrick talks about the first time he saw Rosso perform on stage and how they made the move from “Pub Rock Comedy” to national drive on triple j.

He also discusses his thoughts on what it takes to survive in radio, his frustrations about the industry’s lack of mentoring programs and why he thinks his greatest social skill is the ability to make awkward social situations even more awkward.

You’ve Gotta Start Somewhere is a podcast that goes behind the scenes of show business to prove there’s no such thing as an overnight success.

Each week Rachel chats with well-known media personalities about how they got into the business, how they’ve managed to stay there and what it takes to build a successful career. Click here to subscribe to the podcast.
