Matty Johns to quit The Grill Team

Former Assistant Editor

Former NRL star and media personality Matty Johns has requested to be moved away from Triple M Sydney Breakfast show The Grill Team.

News Corp reports that Johns, who has hosted the show for eight years, now wants to quit Breakfast radio.

“I need a break from the 4am alarm clock,” he said.

Johns doesn’t want to leave Triple M altogether, but is sick of the early starts.

“Yep, it’s true. I’ve just about had enough and I’ve asked them to consider another role in the business.

“I’ve done breakfast for eight years. How blokes like Alan Jones keep doing it is unbelievable.

Johns, who is Triple M Sydney’s highest-paid personality, also hosts Fox Sports The Late Show.

“Some nights I get to bed about midnight after my Fox Sports show then I’m up at 4am. It’s too much. I just need a break. You know when it’s time.”

The former Newcastle Knights player is contracted to the network until 2019, and all signs point to the fact that Breakfast co-hosts Gus Worland, Emma Freedman and Chris Page will be looking for a new teammate from January.

He’ll be the second long-serving member of The Grill Team to depart the show in less than a year after Mark Geyer moved to The Rush Hour at the start of 2018.
