Hughesy and Kate anchor pursues stand-up comedy in new podcast series

Former Features Editor

You’ll recognise Jack Laurence‘s voice as the anchor for the Hughesy and Kate drive show on KIIS, but the longtime radio jock is about to embark on a new comedy adventure – and capture it all in podcast form.

Launching on September 1, the Sit Down to Stand Up podcast series will follow Jack’s journey from sitting down behind a desk to writing his first five-minute standup set, performing it for the first time, and ultimately perfecting it.

Along the way he will interview a host of stand-up comedians from Australia and around the globe about their own journeys into the world of comedy – how they write jokes, how they deal with hecklers and everything in between.

“I always get a kick out of making people laugh at the pub or at a BBQ with friends and have always wondered if I could transition that onto the stage in front of a paying audience,” he told RT.

“It scares the life out of me but if I don’t do it now I never will.”

Jack’s hope is that once he has a few standup sets under his belt, he’s like to be confident enough to enter the RAW Comedy competition.

The podcast will initially launch with three episodes, with the first episode of ‘Sit down to Stand Up’ featuring Jack’s colleague and Australia’s #1 comedian, Dave Hughes.

Prior to the launch, Jack added that he has already learned one of the biggest lessons in comedy: “Be prepared to suck!”

“I’ve spent a lot of time thinking ‘I have to nail this, everything I say needs to be killer!’ but it just doesn’t work like that, like any job you have to hone your craft.”

“As one comedian told me ‘This isn’t your HBO special!'”

You can preview the podcast series on Soundcloud now.

This is awesome – I don’t care that others claim it has been done before. Nobody complained that Gamechangers podcast was just a copy of other podcasts.
Jack is talented and likely to make more traction than that other standup podcast
