Out with the Old, In With The New

It’s not every day a radio station gets a new transmitters, let alone a complete new tower and antenna array at the same time.

Time Saving Pro Tools Tips

I’m sure that most Commercial and Imaging Producers could agree that if there’s one thing they could use more of, it would be time.  It seems like every job is ultra urgent and needs to be on air yesterday.  I’m always looking for quicker ways of doing things to give myself more time to concentrate on the creative side of things, which is why I became a producer in the first place.

Here are my top 10 time saving Pro Tools tips.

Location recording for newbies

Brian Newington is a legendary radio producer who has worked at many of the great radio stations over his 50+ year career.

One of the biggest shocks for new students doing the Cert3 Tafe Radio Course is recording an interview in the great outdoors.

After weeks of being in a comfortable soundproof studio they are thrust outdoors, complete with a portable recorder to practice interviewing. It dawns on the students that there are heap of worldly noises to contend with. Noisy traffic, barking dogs, screaming kids, ear piercing police sirens. Also being on the flight path to Sydney’s airport you can guarantee a Jet will fly over Petersham campus every 20 minutes and at an extremely low level.

Digital Radio - A Journey or a Destination ? pt 1

Guest Contributor Des DeCean is an Inductee into the Radio Hall of Fame. Today is part 1 of his views on Digital Radio.

It is now just over 3 years since Digital Radio launched in Australia.

Having played a significant role in the development of DAB+ technology and its adoption then rollout in Australia, I consider myself to be a passionate supporter of the technology and the benefits it can deliver to consumers, broadcasters, and advertisers. I am however, concerned about what appears to be a lack of passion and commitment to the medium by some broadcasters.

In this article I express my views on the situation as I see it. You may agree or disagree with me, but hopefully I will at least provoke some further discussion on just where the rollout of DAB+ in Australia is going.

How do you do an OB from a bike?

Last week, Radio Today wrote about 92.9 Perths efforts to raise money by doing a complete show riding bikes from Perth to Mandurah.

An extraordinary effort from the Breakfast show (see here), but also an exceptional effort by the 92.9 engineering team.

The true cost of mobility

John Parikhal and Taran Swan are founders of 'The Media Fix', a group that helps organisations stay on top of change, anticipate opportunities and take effective, competitive action.

With their permission we reprint their article, originally titled 'why cbs will love acura - for a while) about the true cost of mobility. Whilst from an American perspective, it is an insight into where we may be heading with in-car wifi.

The dirty little secret of the mobile revolution is that real ’mobility’ is expensive. Very expensive. And, the jury is out as to whether the consumer will pay.

Here are the facts.

There are basically two kinds of mobile. Wi-Fi and Wireless. For Wi-Fi, you have to stop moving and sit or stand in your home, a Starbucks, an airport or any other Wi-Fi enabled hotspot.

In other words, it’s not fully ‘mobile’. With true Wireless, you’re free to move and take your entertainment with you – but you have to pay a wireless carrier like AT&T or Verizon. And you pay them a lot.
