The Reason I am

When we’re busy, overly tired or lonely it can be very easy to forget why we get out of bed each day; to remember what our purpose is. Why we do what we do, where we’re headed, and why. Do you have a reason for being? I know you do.

It has been told to me people need to do things of and for themselves otherwise these things will lack real benefit and genuine ongoing motivation. My experience however often tells me otherwise. I’m not saying you shouldn’t seek a sincere and explicit purpose, a drive for your life from within, or some specific direction for you; yet I fear the truth of it is, this inner-purpose is rare.

For me (when I remember) my real drive, my ultimate reason for being lay within my son – he’s all the reason I need to keep getting out of bed, to keep striving and reaching.

Recently I viewed the film A Beautiful Mind, the story of John Nash, a man who lived by all accounts quite a life. Whilst I’m positive the screenwriters took some liberties with the narrative, Mr Nash’s acceptance speech at his Nobel Prize Giving Ceremony did bring a tear to my eye.

I’ve always believed in numbers and the equations and logics that lead to reason.

But after a lifetime of such pursuits, I ask. What truly is logic? Who decides reason? My quest has taken me through the physical, the metaphysical, the delusional – and back. And I have made the most important discovery of my career, the most important discovery of my life: It is only in the mysterious equations of love that any logic or reasons can be found. I’m only here tonight because of you [looking at his wife sitting in the audience]. You are the reason I am. You are all my reasons. Thank you.

On the days when your personal drive wanes, or you forget where you’re going, remember your reason for getting out of bed each day; remember your reason for being.
