you know you work in...

The promotions department is the weird department that seems to have things fall into it that just don’t seem to definitively fit into anyone else role. From a bit of marketing, to helping out the shows in general, every day can be a different adventure.

Those that work outside promotions aren’t always exposed to these adventures and whilst we cannot empathise with challenges in other departments, it’s always fun to know..

You know you work in promotions when…

You have to find your point of difference!

Every station has promotions. From holidays, to tickets to local events, every week every single station is giving away prizes in hope that the prize becomes an extra incentive to engage and listen to the station from TSL to gaining more cume.

But these days, promotions are much more than icy cold cans of coke from the back of the car or giving away $10,000 in cold hard cash. In fact promo managers/integration staff are generally trained to K.I.S.S (keep it simple stupid) for the listeners, so the easier the better.

Promotions 101: back to basics

Sally Dobson is best-known for her work with ESP, initially with Greg Smith, and later with Brian Ford. Sally left ESP in 2011 and, with her partners, owns three radio stations in Australia through their company Resonate Broadcasting.

When I was asked to write an article on Promotions, it struck me that I wasn’t perhaps the most qualified person to do so.  After all, I haven’t actually worked in a physical promotions department for at least a gazillion years.

The Fun and Games Department as I knew it, is now extinct. It’s all shiny and Gen Y and is called the Marketing, Tactics, Multi- Media and Integration Department or something like that.

I have probably forgotten a number of other buzz words that should be included in the title, but hey, I only have so many words to play with.

Roll up Roll up!

Rob McCasker is a former radio programmer and now freelance writer, here he offers his views on Fitzy & Wippa's recent story arc around bringing the world's shortest man 'Dangi' to Australia.

60 years ago freak shows were big business.

Money forked out to see the visually unusual including The Giant, The Three Legged Boy, The Fat Lady and The Thin Man. All classic attractions.

Last week Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa took it upon themselves to revive the genre when they carted around a 72 year old Nepalese dwarf.

The Sydney Breakfast, and syndicated Drive, duo weren’t after money, just ticks in a survey diary.

Prize Winner travel nightmares

Keiran Beasley is a former senior promotions and marketing executive with Austereo and DMG Radio, who now runs Pitch Group, and represents iMAR Entertainment in Australia.

Australia’s continuing love affair with travel means that overseas holidays and experiences abroad will continue to be an aspirational prize that will engage listeners across most target markets. While promotions with overseas holidays can deliver results and sound brilliant on air, behind the scenes they can quickly turn into nightmares.

Through my years in radio promotions, and now with iMAR Entertainment (a specialist agency delivering money can’t buy experiences for media, agencies and brands), I’ve dealt with more than my fair share of winner travel nightmares.

Here are my five tips to help you avoid some of the common traps associated with overseas holiday promotions.
