Fitzy & Wippa play to their strengths as they kick off 2018

Former Assistant Editor

Nova‘s Sydney Breakfast team Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald and Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli have made a strong start to 2018, as they look to raise their position in one of radio’s toughest markets.

Fitzy and Wippa in 2018 are joined by Sarah McGilvray who continues to prove her worth to the show, as well as news, sport and traffic from Matt de Groot and producer Tom Ivey. McGilvray returned from maternity leave and opted for an on-air position with the breakfast team, leaving Ben Latimer to take over as Program Director for the station.

Since returning they’ve been engaging and professional, with Fitzy and Wippa keeping their improvised banter short and sharp – especially compared with several years ago. The show isn’t sounding dissimilar to the ‘Morning Zoo’ format, with spontaneous comic interaction complemented by competent news and tactic delivery.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Fitzy, Wippa and Sarah go head-to-head with the new enthusiasm injected into 2DayFM’s Em, Grant and Ed, but the boys will be playing to their strengths.

Their long-standing relationship as a radio duo is to their advantage, showcased this morning by the great interview with Aussie Hollywood superstar Margot Robbie, during which they were able to make her laugh by referencing the last interview they did with her in 2014.

It’s worth mentioning that Fitzy and Wippa recently signed a new long-term contract for their slot, which they have occupied since 2011, and this will have certainly buoyed their confidence going into the new year.

Finishing at the #6 slot for Sydney Breakfast in Survey 8 last year, Fitzy and Wippa will be looking to improve that position – and this year could be the year they make really good gains.
