“It just seemed to flow really well. We had a lot of fun”: Damien Leith on his first shift at 98.1 Power FM

Former Assistant Editor

Singer-songwriter Damien Leith has officially made the jump to radio broadcasting, starting up a new Breakfast partnership with Stolzy on the Musswellbrook’s 98.1 Power FM.

The news was announced Wednesday morning, that previously solo show ‘The Power Brekky with Stolzy’ would have Leith as a new permanent co-host.

Damien tells Radio Today that after a number of fill-in gigs he’d been looking to get into radio for a while now.

“I’ve been really keen to get into radio,” he says. “So I’ve been keeping my ear to the ground about any opportunities where I could get into it, and I could give it a go.

“I’ve done lots of co-hosts, fill-ins, but I’ve never been involved in my own show, or a show where I could co-host entirely. You know, they don’t come up that often; and in particular, the region as well.

“Hunter Valley is close to Sydney where all of our family [and] my wife’s family are, so the location was perfect.

“And the opportunity just arose actually through yourselves. I saw something advertised on your site.

“And I just wrote to Max at the station and said, ‘Hey, you know I’m really keen on getting into radio.’ And then one thing led to another and before I knew it… Yeah, there was an offer on the table.

Show one on Wednesday generated plenty of hype at the station and on the Power FM socials, with Damien and Stollzy striking up and immediate chemistry.

“It was brilliant,” says Damien. “You know we started it… and we had where we thought the show was gonna go. But until you actually start it, you really don’t know.

“It just seemed to flow really well. We had a lot of fun. It was a lot of laughing, which is always a good thing. We were having fun, so hopefully, people were listening and getting that same vibe.”

As we chatted, Damien made a big point of highlighting how helpful the team at Power FM have been welcoming him into the culture of the station.

“The station’s fantastic. They’re a really lovely team, very open team. Everybody chats, everybody’s friendly to each other.

“As for Stolzy, [he’s] amazing actually, I have to say. He’s got so much experience behind him that to co-host with him is… that’s perfect in itself.

“So, he’s great on air all by himself, but for me to have this opportunity of actually working with him is just brilliant. It really is.

As for the rest of the year, well Damien and Stollzy have plenty of ideas for the good people of Muswellbrook.

“Look, we have a lot of plans,” Damien says.”We’ve been talking through where we see the show going, and what we’re gonna do with it.

“I think the main thing is, we definitely wanna keep it as local and draw even more listeners in, and overall just have fun.

“We’ll kind of create content that follows a story, that kind of goes from day to day. And people will hopefully tune in to see where it goes next.”
