Bob Rogers calls time on 74-year career
2CH announcer Bob Rogers OAM has announced his retirement.
Bob started his career at Melbourne’s 3XY as an office boy in 1942 and has spent a cool 74 years in radio.
A true legend of the industry, Bob has been at 2CH since 1995.
He suffered a stroke on air six weeks ago but was determined to return to his listeners.
Bob revealed that his medical advice was that he hang up the headphones, and focus on listening to 2CH’s Easy Classic rather than keep broadcasting.
His final show will take place this Saturday Night on 2CH.
Hear Bob’s final break on his Mornings show, below:
Bob, I think you’re a brilliant broadcaster. One of the all time greats. But after a stroke, you still want to get behind the mic… good heavens. Mate, give it away, go out on a high and enjoy life. There’s more to it than radio.
Been listening since I was a school boy in the 60’s. Bob you’re an inspiration. PC never caught up with you, thank God. Enjoyed your honesty and that wonderful entertaining wit. Looking forward to the last Saturday night show.
What will we do without you?
Well done, Bob. Great career. Hope you keep broadcasting your Saturday Night
Show. Love it.
Cheers………Kay
BOB I THOUGHT I WOULD SAY THAT 3 YEARS AGO CHRISTMAS NIGHT I HEARD YOU ON 1377AM IN MELBOURNE & I WISH YOU WELL ON YOUR RETIREMENT FROM RADIO 76 YEARS IS A LONG TIME MATE FROM ME TO YOU BOB YOU WILL BE MISSED I HEARD TGE PIODCAST OF YOUR INTERVIEWE ON 2GBN WITH YOUR FRIEND RAY HADLEY. ONCE AGAIN BOB THANKYOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS TI YOUIR LISTENERS OVER 76 YEARS
Bob thank you for many, many years of enjoying such wonderful music and your worthwhile comments. There are not many with your character in the public sphere.
Bob is a genuine radio personality, an absolute legend, and someone so many of todays’ supposed radio icons could learn an enormous amount from.
Bob knows how to communicate. He always understood radio is a one to one medium and used that to great advantage. When I first worked with Bob at 2UE in 1971 he was a superstar. He still is. I hope he’s able to continue his Saturday night show. It’s always manged to out rate most of the competition on both bands.
Bob is a living icon in the true sense of the word. He’ll be missed by so many.
Thanks for everything Bob, you will be sadly missed from our Saturday nights but we are glad you will be taking it easy from now on.
Good luck Bob, I will miss your cheery voice in the mornings, and wish you a happy and healthy retirement. Thank you for all the wonderful music you have introduced me to over the years. Bless you.
Bob,
Devastated, that you are leaving !!! However, your health and family come first. Like you, I still read the news papers. Your voice has been in my home every day since my family and I came to Sydney from the country in 1956. Not hearing it, will be like a family loss. I think you were then at 2SM. Bill Stevenson, the then station Manager, lived on the corner opposite our place. I still recall his car number plate.
Many thanks for so many memories to be treasured. You are one of the few a ” constants ” in our lives, a stabilizing influence and moral compass. Well done! Congratulations on your achievements. Time to be a radio listener. 2CH, indeed Australian radio, is now that much poorer without you. Every good wish to you and your family. ( FOLLOW Dr.’s orders !!! Look after yourself !!! )
I’m an 87 year old loyal fan since the 70’s
and always look forward to Saturday nights…. your repertoire is most enjoyable..
All the best
Teresa B
His Bob, Its been wonderful to hear you on radio, a nice and friendly voice. Thank you for playing great music of our generation and bringing back many memories. Loved listening to the 9 Oclock special – great music and of course playing and promoting Sir Cliff Richard. We appreciate the fantastic job you have done in your years ion radio.
Thank you for the wonderful years.
kind regards Tony Zammit and Gwen Brown
Hey Bob, you were always a sweetheart who always took the time to say Good Morning to me when I was working at Macquarie. I know a lot of people have said it, but you really were one of the ‘gentleman’ announcers and, as you know, they are few and far between. You took the time to ask about my parents when they were unwell and I appeciated that.
I hope you stay well and enjoy your retirement – it’s very well deserved!
Bob
Like I mentioned to you a long long time ago. If you ever retire do not give up your Saturday night program. I was right. Only you can do that show
All good things must come to an end, at least on air.
You and your team will be greatly missed by me and MANY others.
Thank you so much for your years of dedicated service.
Goodbye Bob, and thank you for the incredible pleasure that you have given me over the past 60+ years.
I think, if my memory doesn’t fail me. I first started listening to you on 2SM along with Frank Hyde on the weekends calling the football.
One incident I will always remember was when you found out that the Beatles song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was glorifying LSD. You stated you would never play that song again, I have no doubt, you never did.
2CH please retain Bob Rogers “Sentimental Favourites” on Saturday nights. If Bob can’t present it, then let him choose the playlists.
Goodbye and thank you
John Duncan
G’day Bob,
I’ve been listening to you since your Top 40 days at 2UE in the 50’s and followed you around the dial ever since.
I particularly liked your morning shows on 2UE and in recent years on 2CH I can still recall a lot of your interviews
I wish you all the best for your 92nd Birthday with much good health and happiness for the coming year and always
Best wishes
Peter Howe
